Planning a Wedding in Mexico: FAQ
1
Do you work with couples outside Mexico?
Absolutely. We regularly work with couples planning their wedding from abroad and understand the challenges of organising a celebration from afar. We take care of the local details, trusted vendor relationships, and logistics so you can plan your wedding with confidence from wherever you are.
2
Which destinations do you plan weddings in?
We plan destination weddings throughout Mexico, with expertise across a range of destinations including Mexico City, Tulum, Cancún, Cabo San Lucas, Oaxaca, Puebla, and more. If you have a particular location in mind, even if it isn’t listed on our website, we’d love to hear from you.
3
How far in advance should we book?
We recommend booking your wedding planner 12–18 months in advance, particularly for popular destinations and peak wedding dates. This gives us plenty of time to secure your preferred venue and vendors and thoughtfully plan every detail. That said, we’re always happy to discuss shorter timelines where availability allows.
4
Do you help with accommodation and guest transportation?
Yes. We can assist with coordinating accommodation and guest transportation as part of your overall wedding experience. From recommending suitable hotels and arranging group transportation to and from your events, we help ensure you and your guests have a comfortable experience from arrival to departure.
5
Can you plan welcome parties and other wedding events?
Absolutely. We can plan and coordinate events throughout your wedding weekend, from welcome dinners and cocktail parties to rehearsal dinners and farewell brunches. Each event is thoughtfully considered as part of the overall experience, creating a cohesive and memorable celebration for you and your guests.
6
Do you provide a contract?
Yes. All of our services are confirmed through a written contract outlining the scope of services, fees, payment schedule, and key terms. We want everything to be clear from the beginning, so you can feel confident and fully informed throughout the planning process.
7
How much does a wedding planner cost in Mexico?
At Amor Theory, day-of coordination starts at USD 2,500, partial planning at USD 5,000 and full planning at USD 8,000. The final fee depends on guest count and the number of events you'd like planned. Every couple gets a written quote after a free first call.
8
How much does a wedding in Mexico cost?
A wedding for about 100 guests in Mexico typically costs USD 11,000 to 27,000, covering venue, catering, drinks, flowers, music and photography. Catering usually runs USD 35 to 40 per guest, plus USD 11 to 22 per guest for an open bar. Design-led weddings with full planning, a weekend of events and premium flowers cost more. Most weddings we plan fall between USD 19,000 and USD 35,000, including wedding planning. That is often well below a comparable wedding in the US or UK.
9
What's included in your planning fee?
What our fee covers depends on your package but will include our time and expertise. This can involve vendor sourcing and negotiation, budget tracking, timelines, design direction and management on the day. Vendor costs such as the venue, food and flowers are paid separately, directly to each vendor.
10
How do payments work?
We confirm every booking with a written contract that sets out the scope, fees and payment schedule. A deposit of 25% secures your date, and the balance is paid in stages before the wedding.
11
Can foreigners legally get married in Mexico?
Yes. Foreigners can have a civil wedding at the Mexico City Registro Civil. Each partner needs a passport, a birth certificate that is apostilled in the issuing country and translated into Spanish by a translator authorized by the Mexico City courts, and a few local documents. The office also asks for a Mexico City proof of address, which can be hard for visitors.
12
Should we do the legal ceremony in Mexico or at home?
Many couples from abroad sign the legal paperwork at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Mexico City. It's simpler, avoids document translations, and lets you choose any officiant, language and venue. However, if you want a legal Mexican wedding, we can help coordinate the Registro Civil process and an officiant who can marry you at your venue.
13
Can our ceremony be in English or bilingual?
Yes. Symbolic ceremonies can be in English, Spanish or both, led by an officiant of your choice. A civil ceremony is conducted in Spanish, with an official interpreter if either partner doesn't speak Spanish.
14
What's the difference between day-of coordination, partial planning and full planning?
Day-of coordination (from USD 2,500) is for couples who have already booked their vendors: we take over the final weeks, the timeline and the day itself. Partial planning (from USD 5,000) adds venue and vendor sourcing, design direction and logistics. Full planning (from USD 8,000) covers everything from the first idea to the last guest leaving, including welcome and farewell events.
15
How do you work with couples who live outside Mexico?
Most of our planning happens over video calls, email and WhatsApp. We handle local vendors, site visits and logistics, so you only need to travel for a planning visit if you want one, and for the wedding itself.
16
Do you speak English?
Yes. Our founder, Madeleine, is originally from England and plans weddings in English and Spanish. We are the bridge between you and local vendors, so you never have to negotiate in a second language.
17
What are the best wedding venues in Mexico City?
Mexico City has historic mansions and courtyards in the Centro Histórico, design-led restaurants and rooftops in Roma and Condesa, gardens in San Ángel and Coyoacán, and colonial haciendas within two hours of the city. We recommend venues after hearing your guest count, budget and style.
18
What is the best time of year to get married in Mexico?
The dry season, from November to April, is the most reliable, with sunny days and cool evenings. From June to September it often rains in the afternoon, so outdoor weddings need a covered backup.
19
How many guests can you plan for?
We plan weddings from intimate dinners of 10 guests to celebrations of 250+ guests. Mexico has venues for almost any size.
